How to safely wash trainers in a washing machine

1. Check Care Labels

Always start by checking the care label on your trainers. This will indicate whether they are suitable for machine washing. Trainers made from synthetic materials like nylon, polyester, or canvas are generally safe, while leather or suede should be hand washed to avoid damage.

2. Prepare Your Trainers

• Remove Laces and Insoles: Take out the laces and insoles. This prevents tangling and allows for a more thorough cleaning. You can clean the laces separately by hand if needed.
• Pre-treat Stains: If there are any stubborn stains, pre-treat them with a stain remover before washing.

3. Protect Your Trainers

Place your trainers inside a pillowcase or mesh laundry bag. This protects them from getting caught in the drum and minimizes noise during the wash cycle. Adding a couple of old towels can help balance the load and cushion the trainers.

4. Select the Right Wash Settings

• Temperature: Use cold water or a low temperature (around 20°C to 30°C) to prevent fading and material damage. Avoid hot washes as they can warp materials and weaken adhesives.
• Cycle Type: Choose a gentle or delicate cycle with minimal agitation. If your machine has a specific sportswear cycle, that would be ideal.

5. Use Appropriate Detergent

Opt for a mild detergent, avoiding bleach or harsh chemicals that can damage the materials of your trainers. A small amount is sufficient.

6. Drying Your Trainers

After washing, do NOT use a tumble dryer as the heat can distort their shape and damage adhesives. Instead, air dry them at room temperature. You can stuff them with newspaper to help maintain their shape while drying.
