How to Defrost a Fridge Freezer: Step-by-Step Guide

Defrosting your fridge freezer is essential for efficient cooling, reduced energy use, and keeping food safe. Here’s how to do it properly:

1. Prepare and Protect Food

  • Switch off & unplug the appliance.
  • Remove all food items, storing frozen and perishable foods in coolers with ice packs, or temporarily in another fridge/freezer.
  • Take out drawers and shelves, if possible—if they’re stuck, leave until ice softens.

2. Set Up for Mess Management

  • Place towels, plastic liners, or shallow trays around and inside the freezer compartment to collect melting ice and prevent water damage.
  • Ensure drainage: Some models have a drainage spout—use a bowl or pan underneath.

3. Speed Up Defrosting (Optional)

  • Leave doors open to let warm air in.
  • Place bowls of hot water (not boiling) on shelves or in the freezer compartment to melt ice faster.
  • Use a fan facing the open freezer to circulate air for quicker melting.
  • Don’t use knives or metal tools—remove ice chunks gently with a plastic scraper once softened.

4. Clean & Dry Thoroughly

  • Wipe away all remaining water and ice with towels.
  • Clean inside compartments and seals with warm, soapy water.
  • Rinse and dry all surfaces, especially drip trays and rubber gaskets.

5. Restart and Restock

  • Plug the fridge freezer back in and close doors.
  • Wait until the interior returns to proper cold temperatures before replacing food (check that the freezer reaches at least -18°C/0°F).
  • Reorganize food for efficient air circulation.

Quick Tips

  • Defrost when ice reaches over 5mm thick or at least once per year.
  • Avoid boiling water or hairdryers—they may damage your appliance.
  • Regular cleaning after defrosting will help prevent odors and build-up.

Defrosting your fridge freezer regularly ensures top efficiency, prevents costly repairs, and keeps food safely stored for longer.
