How to Clean a Dishwasher: Step-by-Step Guide

Keeping your dishwasher clean is the secret to odour-free, streak-free dishes and maximum appliance life. Here’s how to do it safely and thoroughly:

1. Clean the Filter

  • Find the filter at the bottom of your dishwasher.
  • Remove and rinse it under warm running water, using a soft brush to get rid of trapped food or grime.
  • Replace the filter when clean—some filters twist or clip back into place.

2. Wipe Down the Door & Seals

  • Wipe the door edges, seals, and handle with a damp microfiber cloth and mild dish soap or white vinegar.
  • Pay extra attention to corners and the rubber gasket to remove residue and build-up.

3. Check and Unclog Spray Arms

  • Remove the spray arms if possible; rinse under running water.
  • Use a toothpick or thin wire to poke out debris from blocked holes.
  • Reinstall spray arms once clean—this guarantees powerful, even water spray.

4. Clean the Drain

  • Remove the bottom rack to access the drain.
  • Clear out any visible debris or buildup.
  • If you notice pooling water, check for clogs and consult instructions on safely unclogging the drain.

5. Run a Cleaning Cycle

  • Place 1–2 cups of distilled white vinegar in a dishwasher-safe container on the bottom rack.
  • Run an empty, hot-water cycle (no detergent). This removes grease, limescale, and odors.
  • After the vinegar cycle, sprinkle 1 cup of baking soda on the bottom and run another short, hot cycle for extra freshness.

6. Optional: Use Dishwasher Cleaner or Salt

  • For hard water areas, add dishwasher salt to the salt compartment to prevent limescale.
  • Use a dedicated dishwasher cleaner tablet or powder monthly for maintenance—follow package instructions.

7. Clean the Exterior

  • Wipe the outside, handle, and control panel with a damp cloth and mild soap.
  • For stainless steel, wipe in the grain direction using dedicated cleaner, avoiding abrasive sponges.

Extra Tips

  • Clean your filter and check spray arms monthly for best results.
  • Run a full cleaning routine every few months or as needed for odours or poor cleaning.
  • Address leaks, unusual noises, or draining issues early—these often require a closer look or a professional.

Following these steps ensures a fresh-smelling, reliable dishwasher and sparkling dishes every time!
